Singer Cyndi Lauper has announced she’s launching a safe haven housing area in New York’s Harlem neighborhood for LGBT youth.
True Colors Residence will open on West 154th St near Frederick Douglass Blvd in Manhattan on September 1. Youth who join the residence will be responsible for paying rent based on their income and will be linked with programs for education, recreation and employment.
Up to 40% of homeless youth in New York City are LGBT. From the press release:
“Although TCR will not require participation in its programs, a variety of social and educational support services will be available to all who request them. Our primary goal is to provide a physically and emotionally safe and supportive environment that will empower our young residents to be the self-loving, happy and successful individuals they were meant to be.”
Talk about giving back! This is really inspiring. You go, Cyndi Lauper.

Absofacto, I’m Gonna Make My Move (from the album Sinking Islands)
Absofacto is Ann Arbor, Michigan’s Jonathan Visger and I’m loving this closing track on the album “Sinking Islands.” I’m Gonna Make My Move has the feel of Jason Schwartzman’s Coconut Records mixed with some Weezer and there’s also a bit of an Enya meets Dum Dum Girls thing going on too. And oh it all works to make a delightful as fuck eargasm! If you like “I’m gonna Make My Move” and want to hear more you can stream (and purchase) all of “Sinking Islands” over at Bandcamp!

Big Troubles, Sad Girls (from the album “Romantic Comedy”)
Big Troubles just makes damn delightful jams. the latest one “Sad Girls” sounds like a track you’d hear on a GIRLS album. It’s just pretty splendid. Romantic Comedy drops 9/27!
A Crayon Called Wild Blue Yonder, Riptide
I suppose I just have a bias to anything with the words “Rip Tide” in it thanks to Zach Condon. I love Beirut’s album “The Rip Tide” so naturally when I saw that was the title of a song on A Crayon Called Wild Blue Yonder’s “Manchmal” I had to press play. And oh is “Riptide” an out of this world dreamy gorgeous track with vocals that just make you swoon like in a Shara Worden, Florence Welch, Katie Stelmanis, Annie Clark way. If you want to stream (and or purchase) all of Manchmal (and it’s excellent stuff) head on over to Bandcamp!
Caged Animals, Teflon Heart
Seriously you go away for a week and it’s like everyone and their grandma came out with some new awesome jams. Ahh I’m so behind. I will catch up, oh I will! But I figured let’s start with one of my favorite Bandcamp-ers Caged Animals and a great new song called “Teflon Heart.” And there’s a Star Slinger mix of Teflon Heart found on the album “Teflon Heart” which drops on September 19th! You can check out all the Caged Animals goodness on Bandcamp because oh it’s some stellar stuff!
You’ve got a teflon heart and nothing sticks to you, you’ve got a teflon heart I think I want one too…

Just before France conceded to African demands for independence in the 1960s, it carefully organised its former colonies (CFA countries) in a system of “compulsory solidarity” which consisted of obliging the 14 African states to put 65% of their foreign currency reserves into the French Treasury, plus another 20% for financial liabilities. This means these 14 African countries only ever have access to 15% of their own money! If they need more they have to borrow their own money from the French at commercial rates! And this has been the case since the 1960s.
Believe it or not it gets worse.
France has the first right to buy or reject any natural resources found in the land of the Francophone countries. So even if the African countries can get better prices elsewhere, they can’t sell to anybody until France says it doesn’t need the resources.
In the award of government contracts, French companies must be considered first; only after that can these countries look elsewhere. It doesn’t matter if the CFA countries can obtain better value for money elsewhere.
Presidents of CFA countries that have tried to leave the CFA zone have had political and financial pressure put on them by successive French presidents.
Many developing nations are in debt and poverty partly due to the policies of international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
Their programs have been heavily criticized for many years for resulting in poverty. In addition, for developing or third world countries, there has been an increased dependency on the richer nations. This is despite the IMF and World Bank’s claim that they will reduce poverty.
Following an ideology known as neoliberalism, and spearheaded by these and other institutions known as the “Washington Consensus” (for being based in Washington D.C.), Structural Adjustment Policies (SAPs) have been imposed to ensure debt repayment and economic restructuring. But the way it has happened has required poor countries to reduce spending on things like health, education and development, while debt repayment and other economic policies have been made the priority. In effect, the IMF and World Bank have demanded that poor nations lower the standard of living of their people.

This track is definitely for fans of Best Coast and the Dum Dum Girls…If you are smitten with it too you can download “Crying” (for a name your price value) over at Bandcamp!
