“I’m dubious that men have even the slightest idea what they’re talking about when they say “no makeup.” Most guys I’ve dated couldn’t explain the difference between a skirt and a dress, so forgive me if I am hesitant to believe they fully grasp the uses and appearance of various cosmetics. In fact, I hypothesize that they actually don’t know the difference between no makeup and natural-looking makeup.
Which is why these same dudes who prefer us make-up free can turn around and drool over the world’s most beautiful models and actresses, not one of whom they’ve ever seen with a bare face.
And in the end that’s what really, really pisses me off about the whole thing — that we can read about how men don’t like us to wear makeup on page 39, then turn to page 40 and see photos of gorgeous models who spent hours in the makeup chair or ads for the very same cosmetics we don’t need.
It’s the disconnect of being trained since birth to look a certain way, only to have dudes turn around and go, “Don’t you know we hate all that stuff on your face?” Like it was our idea! Like women collectively woke up one day and thought, “Wouldn’t it be awesome to slap a bunch of chemicals and dyes on our faces every morning from now on?”

Men and “no makeup”, expectation vs reality

Word, I do think most men who claim to love the makeup free look, really don’t know the difference between natural and none. Thus they can shove it.

I dated a recovering hippie once, who chided me for wearing SO. MUCH. MAKEUP. And I was wearing like, powder, eyeshadow and mascara. I was like, dude, you have no idea how high this goes. All the way to the White House. This is NOTHING. Babies are born wearing more makeup than this.

The erasure of women’s work is so complete that there are men who seem to think that—unless we be monsterous freaks—we’re naturally hairless and have that fresh-faced “artless” look only expert application of makeup can achieve. They also think that food makes itself; houses, clothes, and toilets clean themselves; and that all the emotional work women do for the men around them is just natural and easy rather than an expression of effort. Oh! And they think that family occasions plan themselves, that “thank you” and Christmas cards send themselves… etc. etc. etc.

Y’all know I love my makeup but this is still pretty great and full of truth.

I was once talking about this very issue with a guy friend and he was like “but you don’t wear makeup!” at the time I had on concealer, foundation, powder, eyeshadow, mascara, and lipstick. it was amazing!

truth. also, relevant, as i literally just had a man say “none of that!! you are beautiful the way you are!!” as i filled in my eyebrows (i’m on the train). you probably wouldn’t be saying that if i hadn’t already applied foundation and cheek stain and i know it ok.

A guy I knew had this logic: girls with heavy makeup = bitches, girls with light makeup = sweethearts.
