I just had a thought.
I think that people who are tired of hearing about racism aren’t just tired of people talking about it. I think they’re tired of how uncomfortable it makes them feel. I think they’re realizing that a lot more goes into being racist than dragging someone for a mile or so behind a truck, hanging up nooses in their places of business, or calling someone something their mama didn’t name them.
I think they realize that if that one thing another person did was racist, maybe they’ve done racist things too. I think that scares them, because I think they’re afraid to discover that maybe they’re a bad person.
Now, now, I’m not calling anyone a bad person. I am saying, though, that there’s nothing wrong with taking a hard look at yourself, realizing that you may have done something fucked up, and resolving to not do it again.
If you find that too difficult, though, if you’re not even willing to take a look, to think about it, then maybe you are that thing that scares you so much, and maybe you need to hear about it.
