The Marvelettes “Dance A While, Cry A While” (1964, Unreleased. From The Marvelettes Forever More, 2011).

A Tale of Two Gemini’s named Gladys, A Birthday Week.

Last post I mentioned that The Marvelettes actually recorded a host of potential singles as 1963 turned into 1964 with Gladys Horton on lead, but only one (last nights post) made it out the Motown Studios and out to their solid fan base.

One of the more raw, likely unfinished tracks is this wonderfully tortured uptempo blast about being stood up for a date. The magic that Gladys is able to do, from the absolute glee of anticipation into the introspective realization that your plans might not work out is one of those painfully beautiful moments quite common to Girl Group records, if you listen closely enough.
