Title: If I Ever Needed Love
Artist: Ruby Johnson
Ruby Johnson “If I Ever Needed Love” (Volt 147, 1967)
The most criminally overlooked, even now standing in the shadow of the more siren like Wendy Rene in the canon of Stax/Volt women is the late Ruby Johnson. Although she only released a total of 3 singles for the label, they are some of the finest records from that label.
Her last single for the label was this quite naked, vulnerable plea delivered with the maturity of being among (at 31) one of the oldest women on the label (if not in the field of contemporary R&B). Unfortunately it didn’t chart, and it brought a close to her time at the label.
